Project: Sturgeon Bank Sediment Enhancement Pilot Project
Client: Ducks Unlimited Canada
Location: Richmond, BC
Led by Ducks Unlimited Canada, this pilot tests whether raising the leading edge of tidal marsh can slow ongoing recession in the Fraser River estuary. Clean Fraser River dredge material is pumped through a 1.4-km pipeline to the marsh edge and left for tides and winter storms to naturally redistribute. Over the four-year pilot, ~27,000 m³ has been placed. In 2025, the project received the Environmental Managers Association of BC’s Remediation & Restoration Award.
Bluedot’s role involves providing technical input from a biology perspective; leading regulatory strategy to navigate BC EAO and ECCC Disposal at Sea approvals and liaising with DFO; supporting contractor tendering, construction implementation, and post-construction debriefs; designing and overseeing baseline and follow-up monitoring; providing Environmental Monitoring during construction; preparing annual reports; and, facilitating the Technical Working Group and Stakeholder Round Table.
